Herald article by Dr Russell Wills - 'How We Can Reduce Youth Offending'

One of our own, Dr Russell Wills, has written a compelling article on how we can meaningfully reduce youth offending in Aotearoa. Drawing on research and frontline experience, he outlines practical, evidence-based solutions that focus on prevention, support, and systemic change.

This is an important read for anyone working with children and young people. You can find the full article here:

His article follows on from the Paediatric Society's recent submission on the Oranga Tamariki (Responding to Serious Youth Offending) Amendment Bill, which he also helped author.

In our submission, we raised serious concerns about punitive approaches such as military-style academies, the removal of Family Group Conferences, and the use of force on young people—highlighting the need for trauma-informed, evidence-based interventions instead.
