Responsive learning:
Learning together and working collaboratively with parents
Presented by Dr Cait Harvey, Occupational Therapist and Lecturer at Otago Polytechnic
12pm - 12.30pm | Tuesday 8 April, 2025 | Hosted on Zoom
In this session, Dr Cait Harvey shares about her doctoral research. This grounded theory research aimed to construct a theory explicating the process of learning between parents and occupational therapists who work with children, and the contextual factors that influence that process. A dynamic, substantive theory of ‘Responsive learning: Learning from and with each other’ was constructed.
Key findings are that the learning process is deeply relational and learning between parents and therapists is a bi-directional process with parents and therapists learning from and with each other, and continually responding to each other as needs, situations, and contexts change.
The findings potentially extend beyond professional and contextual boundaries. The theory can equip clinicians with a way of establishing, sustaining, and working in collaborative relationships through a process of responsive learning.
Cait will share how this research was conducted and discuss the findings.
This will be followed by a knowledge translation session in May.
